After the success of his period saga Bajirao Mastani, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set with his next project based on the legend of Rani Padmini titled 'Padmavati'.Fans are eagerly waiting for another epic period Bhansali film.

The legend goes that Rani Padmini also known as Padmavati was an exceptionally beautiful queen in the 13-14th century and the wife of Rawal Ratan Singh, the Rajput ruler of Chittor. After hearing the description of her mesmerizing beauty by one of his courtesean Raghav Chetan, Allaudin Khilji the then ruler of Delhi came to Chittor to catch a glimpse of the queen. But he was allowed only to see the reflection of Padmavati, by Rawal Ratan Singh. After seeing just the reflection of Padmavati, Khilji became so obsessed with her that he decided he would not return to Delhi without her. His obsession paved the path for a full fledged war on Chittor, which resulted into massive bloodspill. When Padmavati was certain that defeat of Chittor is inevitable, she chose death over submission to Khilji.A huge pyre was lit and Padmavati with many other women of Chittor jumped in the flames.Despite winning the war, Sultan Allaudin Khilji could not achieve what he fought for and was left devastated. That’s only the basic storyline.

Like every other historic legend, this one also has various versions of it and we don’t know for sure which version has fascinated Bhansali. And like every other Bhansali film this one is also making way for controversies.

A Rajput group called Karni Sena stalled the shooting of the film at Jaigarh fort claiming that the film is showing 'wrong facts'.
We know very less to be sure about the story of the film, but we do know that Deepika Padukone is cast as Rani Padmavati and Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor will play Allaudin Khilji and Rawal Ratan Singh respectively. As always, the hopes are high from yet another historic film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali
